Note from the author:

Back in 1985,  it seems like I was hosting new landlubbers on my Hunter 30 just about every weekend from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. In response to a real need for a useful, beginning orientation, I used to write out pages of dos and don'ts... what to wear, what to leave home, where to stand, why a boat healing 15 degrees heading to windward was not about to sink, basic safety info... you get the idea. I kept it light and fun, but I got in all the things I wanted, like what not to flush down the head and why black soled, or high heel, shoes are not appreciated by skippers.

Well, one thing lead to another and, before I knew it, I had hired an illustrator, learned desk-top publishing (circa 1985), had printed up 5,000 copies and found myself distributing these books in six coastal states and Bermuda. I gave away about a hundred, sold another 3,000 at $5.95 each, and misplaced about 1,900 when I moved and got remarried... until last month when I was spring cleaning out the attic and found them again.

Gosh! A windfall. And, you know, skippers and their non-sailor friends are just as needy of this book today as they were in '85. Each book has a front page invitation where you fill in the time date and location of your boat. It has a self mailer cover that you address to your guest(s). The books have been preserved in shrink-wrapped 6-packs and the only thing about them that is no longer useful is the self mailer "final exam" after the last page. The exam is still good (and fun), but the mailing address is long gone, so you need to cover it up with your own address.
